Microscopic Description

described by western minerals inc. as 'porphyroblastic metasediments/hybrid rocks, interpreted by eales and his coworkers as metamorphosed 'red beds' formation sediments but conceivably magmatic in origin. the specimens illustrate the range in textures and (3)
the outer rim of this bomb is glassy with vesicles and augite and olivine phenocrysts. small, widely dispersed plagioclase microlites are also present. the core of the bomb contains a porous aggregate of fragmental quartz held together by glass. (3)
augite and olivine are the two predominant crystalline phases in this vesicular basalt and define a microporphyritic fabric. iddingsite replacement of olivine is minimal. as smaller crystals, both phases, along with opaques, a feldspar, and glass, comprise (2)
glaucophane, muscovite, sphene, and elongate aggregates of epidote-group minerals define the foliation in this thin section. poikiloblastic garnet and omphacite grains contain inclusions which include glaucophane and rutile. (2)
large, interlocking calcite crystals comprise this marble. this thin section is useful for finding interference figures. (2)
the feldspar grains in this thin section span a broad range of sizes, with larger grains displaying strong lamellae of either the blebby or flame variety. the mafic phases are anhedral to skeletal in shape and are much less abundant than the more felsic ph (2)
the groundmass of this thin section contains a combination of glass and indiscernible crystals. it is densely populated by phenocrysts of a wide range of sizes and composition, which due to their angularity, lend a very fragmental texture to the rock. the (2)
the olivine phenocrysts in this vesicular basalt are unaltered, in contrast to the second phenocrystic phase, plagioclase, which has a speckled, mottled alteration texture encroaching concentrically inwards from the grain boundaries. only the cores and a t (2)
this coarse-grained ophitic norite contains intergrown plagioclase and orthopyroxene. chlorite alteration of pyroxene is pervasive. (2)
this thin section consists of two oriented barite crystals, both good for obtaining interference figures. (2)
